Shower for Good Self-care

I have to be honest with you.  Sometimes I go days without taking a shower.  It feels like this monumental task that I don’t have the energy to complete.

I feel gross, and my hair is greasy.  But I just can’t seem to get in the bathroom and take a shower.  My mom will try to talk me into doing it to no avail.

Occasionally, I negotiate with myself and take a sponge bath.  After that, I wash my hair in the sink.  For some reason, this feels more doable than taking a shower.  It doesn’t make sense because it takes more time this way.

There are several benefits of hygiene.  You are less likely to get sick, and spread germs.  People will have a better impression of you.  You will be more confident.  Taking a shower soothes your nervous system, thus making you feel calmer.

If you find yourself avoiding proper hygiene, let your therapist know right away as this is an early warning sign that you may be having a mental health episode.

Try to act as if you are a person who keeps up on personal hygiene.  You can start small, and just wash your hands or brush your teeth.  Once you complete either or both, you can see if you are more motivated to shower.

You can also talk about what is happening with a trusted confidant who can validate your feelings.  They can also motivate you to practice good hygiene even when you don’t like it.  My mom is this person for me, and she helps me with my motivation.
